Karikal cholan was a great devotee of lord siva here. Sage pulasthiyan disciple of agathiyar showed the way for karikal chola to built many temples. After seeing sage agathiyar with lord Sivas blessings karikal chola built kallanai dam which is famous for its innovative construction even today.

King raja raja chola had visited this temple and worshipped lord siva in this temple as he did as instructed in his dreams by lord siva himself.
